About Hydrocele

A hydrocele occurs when abdominal fluid fills a sac within the scrotum, leading to swelling that can cause discomfort or pain. It can affect one or both sides of the scrotum. Hydroceles are found more commonly in infants and young children, and they often go away on their own. If it does not go away on its own, your child may require surgery.

Common Symptoms

The most common symptom of hydroceles is swelling of the scrotum.

Other symptoms include:

• Pain
• Discofort
• A feeling of heaviness

Treatment

In most cases, a hydrocele will not require treatment; most go away on their own. If it does not resolve itself on its own after a few years, your child’s healthcare provider may recommend a hydrocelectomy. During the procedure, a surgeon will remove the hydrocele and close the opening. If left untreated, an inguinal hernia may develop, but this is uncommon.
